What is Muhammad University of Islam?
Muhammad University of Islam is a private religious, educational institution established in the early 1930s by Master Fard Muhammad and the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad in Detroit, Michigan. It was later re-established by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan in 1989. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad desired that black children be properly educated by their own teachers and taught a special knowledge (knowledge of self and God) that will grow the student into a reflection of God and empower them to take their proper position as future rulers and learners of a whole new world of peace (Kingdom of Allah (God)). Our aim is to produce students who not only possess the mind of rulership (leadership), but also one of high intellect, high moral conduct and character with the mind to do something for themselves. There are currently 12 Muhammad Universities across the country.

What academic levels are offered at M.U.I.?
M.U.I. offers academic courses ranging from grades kindergarten to 12th grade.

Is M.U.I. just for Muslim students?
Muhammad University of Islam is a Muslim school under the teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. We believe that our people are Muslim (one who submits his/her will to do the will of God) by nature. We understand and believe that a good Christian is a good Muslim and good Muslim is a good Christian. Although the families and students who attend are primarily of Muslim households, 33 percent of our
population is from various faith traditions. We welcome and embrace the diversity of faith and recognize the common thread that runs through all faith traditions that believe in Allah (God). Students are taught Islam (freedom, justice, and equality) as taught by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Our teachings are universal teaching of truth that aids the students in developing a good moral compass and complete knowledge of self.

What kind of courses are offered at M.U.I.?
M.U.I. offers all traditional academic courses with the addition of specialty courses and workshops in manhood/womanhood training, agriculture, economics, self-defense and much more.

What is the curriculum used at M.U.I.? What academic standards are used?
As an independent/private school, we tailor our curriculum and standards to meet the needs of our students. At the core of our curriculum and daily instructions are the teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad (Supreme Wisdom), coupled with academic courses of study. Since Allah (God) is the Author of all life in the universe that we study, He is our starting point in all of our classroom studies since we are studying His creation. Additionally, M.U.I. utilizes
aspects of the Core Knowledge curriculum (K-8), Common Core Standards (K-12), Next Generation Science Standards as well as additional standards developed to our aim and purpose.

What is the graduation rate of M.U.I.?
During the past several years, our high school graduation rate has been 100 percent, with students attending 4-year colleges across the United States. Our 8th-grade graduation rate has been 99 percent during the past several years.
 

Is M.U.I. a safe school?
We pride ourselves as being a violence-free school. We do not have police officers in our school nor on our campus. Our school is secured by the Fruit of Islam (F.O.I.) of the Nation of Islam and the school instructors. More importantly, our strong belief in the protecting power of Allah (God). Fighting and physical altercations are virtually nonexistent at M.U.I. Our moral teachings aid in our development of an environment that reflects civility and peace.

Is M.U.I. an alternative school for troubled youth?
No, M.U.I. is not an alternative school, although the Nation of Islam has a proven track record of reforming human life and improving the human condition. M.U.I. has a distinct mission and purpose that must be embraced by both student and parent. Personal development classes are offered for youth and adults via the National Center of the Nation of Islam.

What are the class sizes like?
M.U.I. traditionally has small class sizes with an average student-teacher ratio of 6:1.

Can M.U.I. serve students who require special services or needs?
Although we desire to serve all of our children, currently Muhammad University of Islam does not have the capacity, staff or resources to properly serve students with disabilities (physical or mental), students with IEPs or diagnosed behavioral or mental disorders (autism). Students who require specialized services must seek schooling that has the capacity, resources, and trained staff to meet their needs.

What is the calendar year like for M.U.I #24?
Muhammad University of Islam is in session approximately 9 months out of the year. Starting in September and ending in July. Muhammad University of Islam is an Islamic school so we do not partake in the holidays and customs that other schools may observe (i.e. Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc.)
 

What is the tuition at M.U.I.?
Our annual tuition is one of the most affordable in the city of Richmond. The upper-grade levels are the highest annual tuition per student and are approximately $5,500. This does not include enrollment fees, book fees, field trips, etc. Student lunch is included in the tuition fee.

What type of lunch is served to students?
Students will partake of fresh milk, toast, bean soup and spring water. Our children deserve the best foods to remain healthy.

Does M.U.I. have an after-school program?

An after-school program would be parent based, funded, and maintained per parent requests.

What is the enrollment process?
Parents must register their student(s) completing the application, present the required records, documentation, student assessment, and testing, student-parent interview, and enrollment, parent forms, contracts, and make upcoming trimester payment.

What are the expectations for Kindergarten enrollees?
Recognize, spell, and write, first, middle, and last name
Recognize, write, and recite (without singing) the alphabet (upper and lower case)
Identify each letter out of order
Know the sounds of each letter (80% or better)
Identify vowels and consonants (80% or better)
Recognize, write, and recite numbers 1-50
Recognize the concepts of fewer, more, up, down, in, out, left, right, etc.
Recognize and draw basic plane shapes (circle, square, rectangle, oval, triangle, heart,
diamond)

Recognize colors and color words
Recognize and recite the days of the week
Recognize and recite the months of the year
Recognize and recite birthdate, phone number, and address (including city and state)
Know mother’s and father’s name
Be familiar with some sight words
Should have daily exposure to language, conversation, and literature
*Children should demonstrate the above skills without assistance.
 

What is M.U.I.’s expectation for parents?
Students and parents who are accepted for enrollment fall under the rules, regulation, and law of the Nation of Islam and Muhammad University of Islam. Parents are expected to be active members in all aspects of school life, primarily supporting the academic and spiritual growth of their child or children. Parents are expected to be financially responsible by paying tuition on time, support all fundraising activities, programs, attend meetings, conferences with teachers. Most importantly, parents must work to present a positive attitude to their children’s reading education, the acquisition of knowledge and the respect for their teachers and school.
